Every monsoon, between mid-July and mid-August, the small town of Deoghar in Jharkhand transforms into one of the largest pilgrimage gatherings in the world. Shravani Mela — popularly known as the Bol Bam Yatra — draws millions of saffron-clad kanwariyas who walk the 105 km from Sultanganj in Bihar to Baba Baidyanath Dham, carrying pots of holy Ganga water to offer at the Jyotirlinga. This guide is for everyone planning to be part of it — pilgrims, families, and travellers who simply want to witness one of India's most powerful expressions of devotion.

What is Shravani Mela?

Shravani Mela is the month-long Hindu festival held during Shravan (the holiest month of the lunar calendar for devotees of Lord Shiva). Pilgrims fill brass pots — kanwars — with water from the Ganga at Sultanganj, then walk barefoot 105 km along a marked route (kanwar marg) to Baidyanath Dham, where they perform jalabhishek on the Jyotirlinga.

It's been documented since the Skanda Purana and the medieval period. Today, an estimated 8–10 million pilgrims complete the journey every year, making it one of the world's largest annual religious gatherings.

Pilgrims who can't walk the whole stretch typically start from Goriyari or Kalkattiya, completing the last 4–9 km on foot. Many take a taxi up to one of those points.

By train

Jasidih Junction (7 km from temple) and Baidyanath Dham station (1.5 km) handle the bulk of pilgrim trains. Special Mela Specials run from Howrah, Patna, Asansol, Ranchi, Bhagalpur and Delhi during the festival. Book at least 45 days in advance.

By air

Deoghar Airport (DGH), 14 km from the temple, has direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Patna, Ranchi and Hyderabad. Flights fill up fast in July–August.

Darshan during Sawan

The Baidyanath temple opens earlier and closes later during the Mela.

  • Pre-dawn aarti (Kanchacha Puja): 3:00 AM – 4:30 AM
  • General darshan & jalabhishek: 4:30 AM – ~9:30 PM (continuous)
  • Sundar Puja: evening, just before the temple closes

Queue times vary wildly. On a Monday, expect 6–10 hours. On a Wednesday, 2–4 hours is realistic. Several gates exist — the Q-line (free) and the Shighra Darshan (paid, online booking) — choose based on time available.

Tip: Wear cotton clothes, carry minimal cash and an empty water bottle (you can refill at official camps), and don't take leather wallets or belts — they aren't allowed inside.

What to pack for Bol Bam

  • Saffron clothes (kurta-pyjama or simple dhoti) — most pilgrims wear them; locals will sell sets near every starting point.
  • Rubber slippers or barefoot — leather is taboo.
  • Bamboo kanwar with brass pots (rent or buy in Sultanganj, ₹300–₹800).
  • Small towel, ORS sachets, light snacks (fruit, biscuits).
  • Mobile phone in a waterproof pouch — the route is wet, monsoon is active.
  • A small first-aid kit — band-aids, antiseptic, painkillers.

Where to stay during Shravani Mela

Demand massively outstrips supply. Book at least 2 months in advance during Sawan.

  • Premium hotels (₹4,000–₹8,000): Imperial Heights, Glasshouse, Yashoda International.
  • Mid-range (₹2,000–₹4,500): Hotel Ashoka, Sidharth Inn, Hotel Manju.
  • Dharamshalas (₹400–₹1,500): Bihar Bhawan, Rajasthan Bhawan, Anandmayee Maa Ashram, Marwari Yuvak Mandal.
  • Tent cities are set up by the state along the kanwar marg at Suiya and Abrakhia, with thousands of camp beds at nominal rates.

Many travellers who do a Bokaro / Ranchi day-trip skip an overnight stay altogether — the round trip is doable in 18 hours.

Food during the Mela

  • Bhandara (free meals) are served along the kanwar marg by hundreds of volunteer groups. Pure-veg, sattvic — typically dal-rice-sabzi-roti.
  • Prasad shops around the temple sell peda, khaja, motichoor laddoo.
  • Inside Deoghar town, Sezuan, Hotel Yashoda restaurant, and Lalu Pasi Peda Bhandar are reliable. Most restaurants go pure-veg through Shravan.

Practical tips for first-time Bol Bam yatris

  1. Don't underestimate the heat-humidity combo. Even though it's monsoon, walking 105 km is genuinely demanding. Train for a couple of weeks beforehand.
  2. Drink water at every camp — dehydration is the most common reason people drop off.
  3. Avoid leather everything — belts, wallets, watch straps. Pack a non-leather alternative.
  4. Don't carry a kanwar that is too heavy. A 5–8 kg pair of pots is plenty.
  5. Use the official camps for first aid. Don't take roadside medical help unless absolutely needed.
  6. Travel in groups, especially women pilgrims. The route is safe but vast.
  7. Pre-book your return taxi — finding one in Deoghar town on a Sawan Sunday is almost impossible.
