East Sikkim is the busiest, best-connected and most-visited of Sikkim's four regions. Gangtok, the state capital, anchors the area — a clean hill town built along a ridge, with MG Marg, a pedestrianised main avenue that doubles as the social heart of the town. From Gangtok, you can drive to Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass on the Indo-China border, Rumtek Monastery (the seat of the 16th Karmapa), and the Tashi Viewpoint for Kanchenjunga. This guide covers the East Sikkim core — what to do, when to go, and the right 3-day plan.

Top 10 things to do in East Sikkim
1. Walk MG Marg in the evening
Mahatma Gandhi Marg is a 1 km pedestrian boulevard — no vehicles, lined with cafes, shops, benches and street performers. It's the social heart of Gangtok; almost every traveller ends up here by 6 PM.
2. Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake)
A 3,780 m glacial lake about 38 km from Gangtok. Yak rides on the bank, a cable car for an elevated view, and a small Shiva temple. Permit required (PAP for Indians, arranged via tour operators).
- Best months: March – May (still partly frozen) and September – November
- Tip: Carry warm jackets even in summer; it's cold at 3,780 m
3. Nathula Pass (Indo-China border)
At 4,310 m, Nathula is one of the highest motorable border posts in India. Open only Wed/Thu/Sat/Sun, weather permitting, and permits are processed only 1–2 days in advance through a registered tour operator.
- Reason it's special: You can see Chinese army posts and the border gate. Strict no-photography in the immediate border area.
- Tip: Spend at most 20–30 minutes at the top — altitude affects most visitors quickly.
4. Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir
A war-memorial shrine between Tsomgo and Nathula to Sepoy Harbhajan Singh, who died in 1968. Famous local belief: the soldier's spirit is still in service. Most Tsomgo trips include this.
5. Rumtek Monastery
The seat of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, exiled here in 1959 from Tibet. 24 km from Gangtok, the monastery is in a forested valley with a beautiful prayer hall. Open daily 6 AM – 6 PM.
6. Enchey Monastery
A 200-year-old monastery in Gangtok itself, with sweeping town views and a vibrant January Cham dance festival.
7. Hanuman Tok + Ganesh Tok
Two hilltop viewpoints near each other, 7–10 km from MG Marg. On clear days, both have a direct line of sight to Kanchenjunga in the distance.
8. Tashi Viewpoint
The best dawn viewpoint for Kanchenjunga around Gangtok. Reach by 5:30 AM in winter, 5 AM in summer. Cold; carry layers.
9. Banjhakri Falls + Energy Park
A landscaped park around a 100-foot waterfall, on the Gangtok–Ranka road. Touristy but well-maintained — kids enjoy it.
10. Cable car ride
The Gangtok Cable Car (Damovar Ropeway) runs from Deorali to Tashiling. The 1 km ride takes 7 minutes and gives the best aerial view of Gangtok.
