North Sikkim is what every Sikkim trip is built around. Two high-altitude valleys — Lachung and Lachen — give you access to four of the most photographed spots in the eastern Himalayas: the Yumthang Valley of Flowers, Zero Point at 4,724 m, Gurudongmar Lake at 5,154 m (one of the highest lakes in the world), and miles of remote alpine villages with traditional Sikkimese architecture. It is also the most logistically demanding part of any Sikkim trip — permits are mandatory, solo travel is impossible, and the weather can shut you out at the last minute. This guide is the practical version.

How North Sikkim works (read this first)

You cannot do North Sikkim independently. All trips are organised through Sikkim-registered tour operators who:

  1. Process your Protected Area Permit (24–48 hr)
  2. Provide an SUV with a registered driver
  3. Book your camp or guesthouse in Lachung/Lachen
  4. Arrange checkpoint clearances en route

A standard 3-day package costs ₹8,500–₹14,000 per person (sharing basis, sedan/Innova, 2 nights with meals).

Permits required for:

  • Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point
  • Gurudongmar Lake
  • Naga waterfalls, Seven Sisters falls (en route stops)

How to reach North Sikkim

You'll go Gangtok → North Sikkim → back to Gangtok. There's no airport in North Sikkim itself.

FromDistance to LachungDrive
Gangtok117 km6 hr
Bagdogra255 km9 hr
NJP280 km9 hr 30 min

The route is Gangtok → Singtam → Mangan → Chungthang → Lachung. Chungthang is the split point — left to Lachen, right to Lachung.

The proven 3-day North Sikkim itinerary

Day 1 — Gangtok → Lachung (or Lachen)

  • 8:00 AM Departure from Gangtok
  • Stops at Seven Sisters Falls, Naga Falls, Singhik viewpoint
  • Lunch at Mangan (3 hr in)
  • Arrive Lachung/Lachen 4–5 PM
  • Evening leisure / village walk
  • Dinner + early sleep (acclimatisation matters from here)

Day 2 — Day excursion (highest-point day)

Option A — Yumthang Valley + Zero Point (from Lachung)

  • 6:00 AM Departure
  • Yumthang Valley of Flowers (3,564 m) by 7:30 AM — wildflowers from late March to early June
  • Zero Point (4,724 m) by 10:30 AM
  • Yumesamdong hot springs
  • Return Lachung by 2 PM
  • Afternoon rest, evening walk

Option B — Gurudongmar Lake (from Lachen)

  • 4:00 AM Departure
  • Drive past Thangu and onto the 5,154 m Gurudongmar Lake
  • 30 minutes at the lake — limited because of altitude
  • Return Lachen by 1 PM
  • Afternoon rest

Day 3 — Return to Gangtok

  • Slow morning, breakfast, last village walk
  • 10:00 AM Drive back
  • Lunch at Mangan
  • Reach Gangtok by 4–5 PM

The "do everything" 4-day plan

If you want both Gurudongmar and Yumthang/Zero Point:

  • Day 1: Gangtok → Lachen
  • Day 2: Lachen → Gurudongmar → drive to Lachung
  • Day 3: Lachung → Yumthang → Zero Point → Lachung
  • Day 4: Lachung → Gangtok

This compresses two altitude days back-to-back. Acclimatise well; carry oxygen if available.

What to expect at each site

Yumthang Valley (3,564 m)

A wide, river-cut valley with rolling meadows. From late March to early June, the Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary blooms — 24 species of rhododendron in pinks, reds and yellows. Locals also call this "Valley of Flowers".

Zero Point (Yumesamdong, 4,724 m)

The end of the motorable road in this direction — beyond is a restricted border zone. Snowfields year-round. Cold, windy, breath-stealing. Limit time to 30–40 minutes.

Gurudongmar Lake (5,154 m)

A sacred lake bordering Tibet. Said to be blessed by Guru Padmasambhava — it doesn't fully freeze in winter (a small section remains liquid). Spend only 20–30 minutes here; the altitude is severe.

Lachung Monastery

A 19th-century Nyingma monastery overlooking Lachung village. The annual Cham dance in winter is a key cultural event.

Lachen Monastery

1858, also Nyingma. Less ornate than Lachung Monastery but in a beautiful pine-fringed setting.

The single best window for both is mid-October to early November.

Acclimatisation matters

  • Gangtok is 1,650 m. Don't try to drive directly to Gurudongmar from Gangtok — that's a 3,500 m gain in one day.
  • Day 1 should land you in Lachen/Lachung at 2,750 m. Sleep low.
  • Day 2 takes you up to Zero Point or Gurudongmar and back to 2,750 m. Limit time at the top.
  • Watch for AMS symptoms: persistent headache, nausea, breathlessness at rest.
  • Avoid alcohol until after Day 3.
  • Diamox (Acetazolamide) can help — talk to your doctor.

Where to stay in North Sikkim

  • Lachung: Yarlam Resort, The Lachung Eyrie, Le Coxy Resort.
  • Lachen: Saraswati Royal Stay, Lachen Cottage, The Apple Orchard.
  • Permit-included packages: Most travellers use Gangtok-based operators who bundle stay + vehicle + permit.

Standard rooms are basic but warm — gas heaters, hot-water bags, generators for power.
