Sikkim is the second-smallest state in India, but few states pack more variety into less geography. From Gangtok's cable-cars and the Tsomgo Lake at 3,750 m, to Pelling's view of Kanchenjunga (8,586 m, the world's third-highest), to Lachung's alpine valleys and the otherworldly Gurudongmar Lake at 5,154 m — a 7-day Sikkim trip will feel like four different countries. This guide walks you through all four regions — East, West, North and South — with permits, costs, the correct order to do them in, and the practical tips that save your trip.

How to reach Sikkim

By air

Pakyong Airport (PYG) is the closest airport — 33 km from Gangtok. Limited but increasing flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, Bengaluru.

Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the busier alternative — 124 km from Gangtok, well-connected to all major Indian cities. The 4-hour drive into Sikkim is itself scenic.

By rail

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the closest mainline station. From NJP, shared and private taxis run to Gangtok (148 km, 4.5 hours).

By road

NH-10 from Siliguri is the only road into Sikkim. The road follows the Teesta river through dramatic gorges; landslides are common in monsoon.

Tips for first-time Sikkim travellers

  1. Don't try to do Sikkim in 4 days. It's a 7-day trip minimum if you want all four regions.
  2. North Sikkim needs an operator. Permits for Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar are issued via approved Sikkim agencies — solo travel is impossible there.
  3. Mountain sickness is real at Gurudongmar. Take it slow if you're going from Lachen (2,750 m) up to 5,154 m.
  4. Cell signal: Mostly Jio + BSNL. Airtel is patchy in North Sikkim.
  5. ATMs: SBI and Axis available in Gangtok. Sparse beyond. Withdraw before going north.
  6. No drone in defence-sensitive areas (Nathula, parts of North Sikkim).
  7. Plastic ban: Sikkim is India's first organic state — minimum single-use plastic.
  8. Carry warm layers — even in summer, North Sikkim nights are 5–10 °C.
