Most travellers think of Bokaro as a steel city — and it is one of the four largest in India — but it's also a surprisingly green, well-planned town surrounded by hills, dams and pilgrimage spots. Built around the Bokaro Steel Plant in the 1960s, the city has wide boulevards, large parks, and a quality of life that locals are quietly proud of. If you're here for work, a stopover on the way to Deoghar, or a weekend getaway from Ranchi or Dhanbad, this guide will tell you what to actually see, how to get around, and what's worth your time.

A quick orientation to Bokaro

Bokaro is in the Chota Nagpur Plateau, about 110 km east of Ranchi and 60 km from Dhanbad. The city is split into numbered "sectors" — Sectors 1 through 12 plus Chas — and almost everything is walking distance within a sector. The Bokaro Steel Plant, run by SAIL, sits at the heart of the city; tours can sometimes be arranged through SAIL PR.

Quick facts

  • Population: ~570,000 (metro area ~1.1 million)
  • Founded: 1965, around the steel plant
  • State: Jharkhand
  • Closest airport: Birsa Munda (Ranchi, 110 km) — Deoghar (DGH) is closer in flight options
  • Best time to visit: October to March

Top 12 places to visit in Bokaro

1. Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park (Bokaro Zoo)

The city's main green retreat — a 25-hectare zoo in Sector 1 with leopards, sambar deer, crocodiles, and a small aviary. Boating on the central lake, evening walks, and a kids' play area.

  • Entry: ₹20 adult / ₹10 child
  • Best time: 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
  • Closed: Mondays

2. City Park (Sector 4)

The most visited spot in town. Manicured lawns, a musical fountain, a toy train for kids, and an artificial pond. Best at sunset.

  • Entry: ₹10
  • Tip: Friday/Saturday evenings get crowded — go on weekdays.

3. Garga Dam

A 14 km drive from the city, Garga Dam is the local picnic spot. Wide blue water, hills on three sides, and small food shacks at the edge. Boating is occasionally available.

  • Distance: 14 km from Sector 4
  • Best time: October–February
  • Tip: Carry your own snacks; vendors are limited.

4. Tenughat Dam

A larger dam built on the Damodar river, 55 km from Bokaro. Excellent reservoir views, less crowded than Garga, and a small island in the middle. Pair it with a stop at Jharkhand Field Firing Range (drive-by only).

  • Distance: 55 km (1 hr 30 min)
  • Best time: Winter mornings

5. Parasnath Hill (Shikharji)

A 90-km drive south takes you to the highest peak in Jharkhand (1,365 m) and the most sacred site in Jain tradition — 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras attained moksha here. The trek to the top is 9 km one way; doable as a day trip but plan an early start.

  • Distance: 90 km from Bokaro
  • Best time: November–February
  • Tip: Carry water and a hat; the climb is long.

6. Bokaro Mall & City Centre

For a weekend evening — multiplex, food court, brand shopping. Useful when monsoon kills outdoor plans.

7. Ram Mandir (Sector 1)

The most-attended temple inside the city, with morning and evening aartis that draw locals from across Bokaro. Walkable from City Park.

8. ISKCON Bokaro

Quiet, well-kept temple complex on the city outskirts. Aarti at sunrise and sunset. Pure-veg prasadam at the in-house restaurant.

9. Bhagwan Birsa Munda Park

A smaller, leafy park near Sector 12 — popular with morning walkers and yoga groups.

10. Maithon Dam (day trip)

On the Damodar river at the Jharkhand–Bengal border, 95 km from Bokaro. India's first underground hydro plant sits here. The reservoir is beautiful in monsoon; boating is available.

  • Distance: 95 km (2 hr 15 min)

11. Topchanchi Lake

A protected wetland 65 km from Bokaro, popular for bird-watching in winter. The drive through coal country gives you a real sense of Dhanbad's industrial heritage on the way.

  • Distance: 65 km
  • Best time: December–February for migratory birds

12. Bokaro Steel Plant (guided visit)

If you can arrange a plant tour through SAIL (usually for educational groups), it's a genuinely interesting half-day — molten-iron pours, the rolling mills, and the scale of a 5 million-tonne integrated steel works.
